The Space Needle has long been a symbol of innovation and forward thinking. Since its debut during the 1962 World’s Fair, this iconic landmark has stood as a testament to human ingenuity. True to its legacy, the Space Needle partnered with MXTreality to launch StratosVR, a groundbreaking virtual reality bungee jump experience. Not only did this project push the boundaries of tourism technology, but it also set a new standard for guest engagement and shareable memories.
A Leap Into the Future
StratosVR wasn’t just a virtual bungee jump, it was an immersive journey into a near photo-realistic Seattle recreated in virtual reality. Participants entered a custom VR area at the base of the Space Needle, queued, and then stepped into a specially designed tube. Once seated and wearing VR headsets, they were virtually transported to the top of the Needle. From this incredible height, they embarked on a thrilling 604-foot plunge, complete with a simulated bungee cord and forced air blowing from below to heighten the realism.
Every detail was designed to amaze. From the Space Needle’s newly imagined renovations brought to life in VR before they were even constructed, to the vibrant cityscape of Seattle, every second of the experience was crafted to create lasting memories.

A Global Phenomenon
StratosVR wasn’t just innovative; it was wildly popular. For an entire year, it became the most experienced virtual reality tourism attraction in the world, with over 1,000 participants daily. Visitors from all walks of life marveled at the realism and thrill, sharing their awe through countless photos, videos, and social media posts.
Visitor reviews tell the story best:
“That was amazing.”
“I really thought I was doing a bungee jump.”
“I can’t believe the power of virtual reality, and the experience recreated the entire city of Seattle, including planes, people, birds, cars, monorail, boats, and more.”
The Technology Behind the Magic
StratosVR wasn’t just a feat of imagination; it was an engineering marvel. Over six months, MXTreality meticulously rebuilt Seattle in virtual reality using maps, photogrammetry, panoramic photos, and advanced digital modeling. Every building was crafted to be as accurate as possible, down to the cranes, 17 of them, placed precisely in their real-world locations.
To ensure the experience felt unforgettable:
Over 100 testers were involved to determine the ideal duration, long enough to feel fulfilling, short enough to leave guests wanting more.
Gravity adjustments created a heart-pounding thrill without inducing motion sickness.
Artificial intelligence brought the city to life with moving cars, boats, trains, monorails, ferries, yachts, birds, and even a plane that nearly "hits" participants if they look in the right direction.
Every experience was unique, ensuring that no two jumps were the same, even for repeat visitors.

A Legacy of Innovation
Although StratosVR’s run was cut short by the pandemic, its impact endures as a shining example of how tourism destinations can use technology to create unforgettable guest experiences. It showed how integrating virtual reality into attractions could drive engagement, delight visitors, and generate global buzz.
Inspiration for Future Destinations
StratosVR wasn’t just about the Space Needle, it was a blueprint for what’s possible. Its success proves that immersive technology can transform any landmark or tourist destination into a must-visit experience. By harnessing VR, AR, and AI, other destinations can tap into this powerful combination of cutting-edge technology and human curiosity to create their own world-class attractions.
If you’re a destination or tourism operator looking to take your visitor experience to the next level, #StratosVR serves as a compelling case study. Imagine your guests embarking on similarly thrilling, innovative journeys that leave lasting impressions, and memories they can share for years to come.
At the Space Needle, they didn’t just raise the bar; they leapt over it. Will your destination be next?
