Focus and Productivity for Students with Executive Function Challenges

Overview

AugmentedEF is an innovative augmented reality (AR) system designed to support students with executive function (EF) difficulties. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and personalized interventions, AugmentedEF helps students stay engaged, reduce distractions, and optimize their learning experience. Supported by the National Science Foundation, this project is a breakthrough in educational technology for neurodiverse learners.

Our Mission

Our goal is to empower students with EF challenges by creating tools that adapt to their unique needs. AugmentedEF uses advanced AR and machine learning techniques to predict on- and off-task behaviors, providing timely interventions that help students maintain focus and productivity.

MXT's Role

MXT has proudly collaborated with TERC on various education-based projects over the past five years. Our partnership focuses on leveraging innovative technology to enhance learning experiences, particularly for neurodiverse students. Some of our notable joint projects include:

  • uniVRsal Access (Europa): A STEM-based puzzle game designed to engage neurodiverse learners in a fun and interactive way, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • sysAR: A mobile and augmented reality experience that introduces students to systems modeling, helping them understand complex concepts through immersive learning.

  • AccessAI: A pioneering research project exploring the use of Artificial Intelligence to enhance in-game experiences, making learning more personalized and adaptive.

 

By combining our expertise with TERC and collaborating with additional partners like Landmark College and the National Science Foundation (NSF), we aim to create inclusive, cutting-edge educational experiences that benefit a diverse range of learners.

HOW AugmentedEF Works

Step 1: Initial Setup

Students select their preferred AR headset and customize their settings in the AugmentedEF app.

Step 2: Continuous Monitoring

Using head tracking and eye tracking, the system monitors the student’s engagement levels throughout their study sessions.

Step 3: Predictive Intervention

When the system detects potential distractions, it delivers tailored prompts to help the student refocus, ranging from subtle visual cues to more direct audio alerts.

Step 4: Feedback and Improvement

AugmentedEF collects data on student interactions to refine its algorithms, ensuring ongoing improvement and adaptation to each user's needs.

Predictive Machine Learning Model

AugmentedEF utilizes a machine learning algorithm trained to detect moments of distraction before they happen. This proactive approach helps students stay engaged with their tasks, minimizing interruptions and optimizing study time.

Personalized User Experience

Each student can customize their experience based on their preferences and needs. With options for different types of prompts (visual, audio) and headset choices, AugmentedEF ensures that interventions are tailored to each learner’s sensory and cognitive profile.

Diverse Headset Compatability

AugmentedEF is compatible with various AR headsets, including Microsoft Hololens, Nreal, Quest 3, and Apple Vision Pro, allowing flexibility and accessibility for different user preferences.

Data Driven Insights

The system collects data on head position, orientation, and eye tracking to continuously improve the machine learning models. This data-driven approach ensures that interventions are effective and personalized

Co-Design Approach

AugmentedEF was developed with the input of neurodivergent students, ensuring the solution addresses real-world challenges faced by those with EF difficulties. This collaborative process led to the creation of a tool that truly meets the needs of its users.
